John Arthur Brown
May 8th, 1952 - April 17th, 2023
John “Johnny” Arthur Brown of Colorado Springs, CO was freed of his earthly body on April 17th, 2023. He was born on May 8th, 1952 to William Earl Brown, Sr. and Vonceil Imogene Richards in southern Georgia.
Johnny loved to travel and had stories that were sometimes as tall as the mountains he loved. He had visited many places from the depths of Florida where he grew up on Okeechobee all the way up to the Canadian border and everything in between. His favorite stories were his time in Oregon in solitude in a small cabin in the mountains with his mules. He loved western novels especially by William W. Johnstone, western films, WWE which he called his “religion”, and he LOVED chocolate. He had experienced a full life, more than most with his travels. Nature was what he loved, often talking about how much he preferred trees and animals to people. He also had a soft spot for many animals in his lifetime from his mules to dogs, to even talking to the farm animals on the phone when he would call his “son” and “daughter”.
John will tell you, most people didn’t like him and he didn’t like them back. But, if you were lucky enough, you got to know the real John past all the sarcasm and anger he was known for. Knowing him, he wouldn’t want to seem too much like a teddy bear at this point so I will share what he had said to me recently, toned down of course to keep this obituary “G” rated instead of “MA”: He did say he would come back and haunt anyone who tried to care about him after he was gone so they could be reminded why they didn’t like him in the first place. If you knew John, you know. And, I don’t think anyone would question that knowing his stubbornness, determination, and quick wit. One thing is certain, there will never be another Johnny.
He is survived by his “daughter” as he would call his niece April Mendez aka Sissy, his “son” Domingo Guerra Mendez Jr, and their children (Elizabeth-Rose, Grayson, Ladye-Scarlett) of Eastern Colorado; he is also survived by his niece Sara Brown. He was preceded in death by his beloved mother Vonceil Richards, his uncle he is named after John Arthur Brown of California, and numerous friends over the years that he called family.
John will be laid to rest next to his beloved wolf-dog Storm at his niece’s “Goat Head Ranch” as he would call it. There will be a private ceremony with the ones that truly loved him and accepted him as he was, spitfire and all.
