Sue Mogan

Susanne (Sue) Mogan, age 69, born to Thomas and Edith Mogan, received her angel wings on September 29, 2023. Sue’s early days were spent living in Glenolden, Pennsylvania, with her parents and five siblings. While attending St. George Catholic Elementary School, she became interested in the piano, and soon she moved onto Archbishop Prendergast High School in Drexel Hill where she played the cello in the orchestra. From Prendi she moved onward to New York, St. Rose of Sienna College where she studied music education, and after she attained her Master of Music Education at Colorado University in Boulder.

Sue had an exceptional life, traveling, and living in several states in the US and abroad. Sue played cello for the Jefferson County Philharmonic Orchestra performing several times at Red Rock Theatre in Morrison, Colorado. Sue was an active member of her neighborhood, joining the community for New Year’s celebrations (on The Rock!), potlucks, fire mitigation efforts, and other gatherings. Moreover, Sue loved her family, most of whom lived in Pennsylvania. She spoke with her siblings, nieces, and nephews regularly. They admired her amazing athleticism, great determination, her love of swimming, skiing, hiking, and her sense of adventure. Her family was in awe of Sue backpacking by herself through the remote areas of Alaska, and learning how to accomplish technical mountain climbing.

But her real legacy is the more than 30 years she spent teaching music education to thousands of students at Hackberry Hills Elementary in Arvada Colorado. Sue was a gifted music teacher who believed in her students for whom she opened doors to the amazing world of music. Teachers, choirs and orchestras were brought together through Sue’s direction from the thirteen plus schools in the Arvada School District for music events. Sue was very generous and wanted to bring music to everyone. She took her choirs to sing for seniors and led sing-a-longs in nursing homes with her good friend Molly Niven. Sue continued to follow her students and their parents long after they left Hackberry Hill by attending concerts and inviting them and their families up to her Music Mecca (her mountain home). She became known for her “Concert in the Mountains' ' where the families listened to her Suzuki students from ages six to 18 perform in the meadow at her home. There are many people in the music community who recognize how their love of music came from Sue’s dedication as a teacher.

Sue was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas and Edith Mogan, two brothers, Michael Mogan and Thomas Mogan, sister, Justine Green, niece Mary Iovino, ex-husband Nicholas DiGiacomo, and brothers-in-law Richard Hartney and Paul Maggio.

Sue is survived by two sisters, Patricia Mogan and Joanne Hartney, two sisters-in-law, Genevieve Mogan and Betty O’Connell, brother-in-law Brian Green, and 11 nieces and nephews, Brian Maggio, Thomas Maggio, Tricia McCune, Tara Tatasciore, Roseann Stark, Michael Mogan, Joanne Witzel, Kimberly Russo, Janette Grieb, Lisa McCormick, and Amy Duffy.

The water from Sue’s Water Cremation at Be A Tree will be placed in Evergreen Memorial Park.  Memorial contributions in Sue’s name can be forwarded to Save The Music Foundation by clicking on the link below.
