Virginia L. Brost

February 7, 1940 - September 29, 2023

Virginia Brost, loving mother and creative spirit, died peacefully in her sleep on September 29, 2023. She was 83. Virginia had lived a full life and was grateful and gracious through her health struggles to the very end. Her family, her cats, and her books were her treasures and her legacy.

She is survived by her son, Randy (Ellen), daughter Liz, grandchildren Drew, Ryan, and Cambria and her sisters Linda (Bob) and Teri. She is predeceased by her adored parents, Dorothy and Lavern Cook and four of her beloved cats Thai, Molly, Cami and Sabine.

From an early age, Virginia was creative and had a strong imagination. She also had a keen sense of justice, defending classmates who were being picked on, and developed a lifelong affinity for the underdog. Even when her health issues began to take their toll, she continued to pay attention to the issues most affecting those who were struggling or disenfranchised.

Always intelligent, curious, and independent, Virginia forged her own career path with her role as Marketing VP at Otero Savings and Loan and then as creator of her own marketing company, Market Concepts. All of those skills came together in her final career chapter as a realtor. (Her kids have many stories to tell about her passion for finding the perfect home!)

Virginia’s talents and interests evolved. In her youth she was a cheerleader and a majorette, starred in plays, won a beauty contest, and was a talented pianist/organist. In adulthood she was in the vanguard of women trying to balance a career and family. She became an accomplished horsewoman, a sophisticated hostess of dinner parties a consummate cook, and a decorator of her living spaces. Virginia also loved being silly and roped her family in when she could – Christmas caroling through the neighborhood in July was one of those memorable events!

After many years of insatiably reading mystery novels, retirement finally allowed Virginia the time to write her own mysteries. She continued to read avidly (from her six-bookcase library!), follow the news, stay in close touch with her children love and care, and navigate her iPad with sophistication. But she had no greater passion than loving her cats and supporting animal causes. In a wonderful quirk of fate, shortly after Virginia moved into assisted living her floor inherited a cat. Blue became a constant companion for Virginia (aka the Cat Whisperer) and the light of her days there.

Virginia asked to be cremated and to have her ashes mixed with those of her cats and spread to the wind. Her family and close friends will be gathering in the near future to celebrate Virginia’s life and reminisce. Her family is particularly grateful for the love and care the staff at Belleview Assisted Living provided for Virginia during the past year and a half. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Animal Humane Society or to any cause supporting seniors would be appreciated.
