September 26, 2024

Ruthie Rockwell, born in Wisconsin, passed away on September 26th, after decades of serving Northern Colorado communities. She came upon the region by chance when she drove through Greeley while on leave from Ellsworth Air Force Base where she was stationed in the Air Force. After her discharge, she returned to the area, most notably working at the Fort St. Vrain power generation plant in Platteville, Colorado until it was decommissioned as a nuclear power plant and giving decades of service at the University of Northern Colorado where she also earned a bachelor’s degree as a working single parent. In her retirement, Ruthie was an active member in many civic organizations including the League of Women Voters of Greeley-Weld County, the Sierra Club, and Weld Air and Water. She expressed her creativity through a variety of fiber arts and was a regular member of the Needlecrafter’s Club at the Greeley Active Adult Center where she knit items to donate to community members in need.

Ruthie also held degrees from the University of Wisconsin – Whitewater and Aims Community College. She passed on her respect for nature and for learning to her daughter, Angela, who along with her daughter’s partner, Aaron, and their son survive her. Ruthie is preceded in death by her parents, Arvella and Brandon Rockwell.

Her family is holding a celebration of life at the Atlas Theater at 709 16th St, Greeley, CO on Saturday, October 26th from 1pm to 4pm. Please bring stories to share. Refreshments will be provided.
