Danny Wine
October 20, 1937 - October 13, 2022
It is with deep sadness we announce that Dan Wine passed away from late-stage Parkinson’s, on October 13, 2022. Born in 1937, to a military family, along with three brothers, Dan lived in multiple places, and attended several different schools growing up. He had a saying that when the closets got dirty, it was time to move. He graduated from high school at Ramey Air Force Base in Puerto Rico, and attended college at the University of Florida. Eventually his family settled in Denver, Colorado, where he also lived for many years. Dan loved his lifelong career flying for United Airlines. He flew for 37 years, retiring at the then mandatory age of 60. He was a Boeing test pilot for United, and after flying the B-737, B-727, B-757, and B-767, he retired on the B-747. Dan loved every minute of his career with United and always felt gratitude for the opportunity given to him, never taking one day for granted. Dan also enjoyed his hobby of renovating and flying antique airplanes. He appreciated the smallest tail draggers, as much as he loved the Stearman 4E Jr Speedmail; an award-winning plane at the well-known Oshkosh, WI Fly-In. Being a “helpless romantic”, he loved that airplane because he ultimately was able to return it to the original owner’s family. The owner’s son became a very close friend of Dan’s, and his recent passing was a deep loss for Dan. Dan also loved participating in the Colorado Chapter of the Antique Airplane Club, and was an active member for as long as his health allowed.
Dan was married to his first wife, Diane Wine, for fifteen years, ending in divorce. They had two children, Kristin and Mark. In 1985, after many years of being single, and after much deliberation, Dan “bit the bullet” for a second time and married his second wife Marne. He took on her two young children, who were 4 and 7 at the time, and played more than a significant role in their upbringing. Dan and Marne were married 37 years at the time of his passing. It was a blessed and deeply loving marriage.
Dan is survived, and deeply missed by his wife Marne (Marilyn) Wine, daughter Kristin Jonson, (Dan J.), son Mark Wine, (Kelly, deceased), Tyrus Poxson, (Sonia), Joe Poxson (Audrey), thirteen grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by brothers Leonard Wine (Joann, deceased), Joel Wine (deceased), and Gary Wine (Betty).
A service was held in his honor on November 27th, and the family remains grateful to the number of people who attended.
