Roger Dean Story
October 22, 1942 ~ September 4, 2023
Roger Dean Story, 80, passed away peacefully on September 4, 2023 in a retirement home in Denver, Colorado. Roger was born in Las Cruces, New Mexico on October 22, 1942 to his parents, Charles Dean Story and Fae Wheeler. As a child he moved to a farm in Texas and then to Ames, Iowa where his father was finishing his PHD at Iowa State University. He and his brother, Bruce Arthur Story, then moved to Fort Collins, Colorado where Roger finished high school and college. Roger graduated from Colorado State University with degrees in Electrical Engineering and Mathematics.
Roger was fascinated by radios and electrical devices at an early age and he maintained that interest throughout his life, easily merging it into a 40 year computer technology career at Hewlett Packard. His basement was filled with old electronics, computers, scanners, oscilloscopes, robots, and radios. He loved to tinker and rebuild them.
He liked the outdoors and nature, whether capturing crawdads and turtles in the creek as a kid, exploring caves with his brother, visiting hot springs with his childhood friend Clarence, or joining the Colorado Mountain Club. Roger had a wide range of hobbies, belly dancing, origami, collecting old movies, photography, drawing, and drumming. He had a wanderlust for exploring foreign lands and cultures across the globe. His passion for music and art was evident in his annual pilgrimage to Burning Man, where he found both inspiration and community.
The many stories of Roger Story will continue to be shared by his daughter Megan, his son-in-law Erik and his granddaughter, Hazel. Roger was preceded in death by his son, Mark Story. He will be remembered by his former wives Mallorie and Delia and Delia’s children, Deanna and Chris whom he loved like his own children. Roger has many nieces and nephews that loved him and a wide circle of friends and loved ones who will forever hold his memory close to their hearts.
